Chapter 20 Dani

D

ani strained to hear what was happening outside of the truck, but it was difficult, even with just the thin tarp over her and Billy.

“Mr. Harold,” came a deep voice Dani didn’t recognize, “we haven’t had the chance to speak recently. Such a shame.”

“Well, I’m gonna have to kindly ask you five folks to take your trucks and leave my property.” Mr. Harold’s voice was firm and steady.

Dani realized he was giving her information about what was happening outside of the truck with what he was saying.

Five folks seemed like a whole lot of strangers, and if they had more than one truck, that was extra scary. What did they want with him?

“We hear you asking that, but we have a feeling you might be trying to get in our way.” This was a second voice, slightly higher pitched. Dani pictured a short, scowling woman, but she could have been completely off.

Either way, the sound was grating, and Dani felt chills as they spoke.

“I don’t know about that and would just like to be left alone as much as anything, so move along. This is private property,” Mr. Harold said more firmly.

“Based on what we found in your basement, you’re not leaving well enough alone at all,” said the original speaker in a tone that leaked venom behind its politeness.

Dani swore there was a crackle in the air at the mention of the basement. These cultists must have known way more than they had thought if they knew where the harpoon gun was kept. Hopefully, Florence and Kye wouldn’t show up right in time to hand over the harpoons that made it work.

For the ten billionth time in her life, Dani wished that she had a cell phone and lived in a place with reception for it.

Billy began to stir, and she held her finger to her lips. Fortunately, he understood and stayed silent as the humans spoke. He mouthed, What’s going on?

But Dani just shrugged and continued to listen.

“I didn’t want to do this,” Mr. Harold said, “but I’m gonna give you one more chance to get off of my property. There’s nothing for you here.”

“Well, see, we just don’t quite believe you. Maybe you can let us have a look in your truck and you can let us into the basement vault, and we can all be happily on our way.”

“That was your chance.” Mr. Harold spoke in a firm and steady tone.

Dani felt the air change, and through the tarp, red light flashed. There was a popping sound but not a gunshot. It was more the sound of air going out of a hot-air balloon all at once. She couldn’t help it and peeked through the gap in the tarp to see the cultists piling into their trucks, clearly yelling, though she couldn’t hear it over the roar that followed the sound.

Both hands held open at his side, Mr. Harold was staring at them unblinkingly.

Red streaks of light and wind were corralling the cultists into their trucks like a dozen snakes.
